Coupons

Recurly had an outdated coupon tool that was missing important features offered by their competitors. The existing tool was also receiving a lot of complaints to customer service.
Project goals
  • Create a more flexible coupon creation experience
  • Satisfy existing customers who are requesting this feature
  • Bring on new users who need powerful tools for customer acquisition

Introducing the design sprint

This was my first large-scale project at Recurly. Previously, the design workflow did not include user feedback until the product had already been coded and launched.

As the new person on a well-established team of engineers, I was extra aware of how to keep within the comfort zone of the rest of the team when introducing the concept of the design sprint.

People from other departments were very interested in the sudden usage of the whiteboards throughout the office. I was able to engage the rest of the company by talking about the design process during sprint demos which occured every two weeks.

Defining goals up-front

As a team, we spent some time coming up with our success metrics using HEART metrics Methodology. This was also a new aspect of the workflow and later became standard for all projects.

Prototyping and testing

I created a quick clickable prototype using Invision which I tested with Recurly customers. This was also very new to Recurly as a company. My cohorts were amazed at how much information was gathered from the 45-minute sessions that I conducted with customers.

The results

In the end, our team accomplished what we set out to do. The coupon feature was updated and the users who were requesting the feature remained as customers. This feature was also used frequently by the sales team to bring on new clients who were starting out with recurring revenue business models and who needed powerful acquisition tools in order to build a customer base.
